The loss of Nigeria’s Super Eagles to the Bafana Bafana of South Africa in a Nation’s Cup Qualifier on Saturday has claimed the life of a man in Akure, the Ondo State capital.
The man, a retired soldier, had slumped moments after the Eagles conceded the second goal and was rushed to a hospital where he gave up the ghost.
The man identified only as Mr Nigeria, had left his residence at Ajipowo area in Akure for the Barracks to watch the match live on TV.
It was gathered that the man, described as an ardent Eagles’ fan, had watched the match at the Army Barracks in Akure alongside some friends.
His friends notified his family and rushed him to a private hospital after he collapsed. He died around midnight.

The Nigerian Super Eagles of Nigeria moved to 38th in the latest FIFA world ranking.The new ranking now puts the Super Eagles in the fourth in Africa behind Egypt, Senegal and Cameroon.
The top 10 in the world remain unchanged with Brazil, Argentina, Germany, Chile, Colombia, France, Belgium, Portugal, Switzerland and Spain retaining their spots.
Nigeria climbed up two places after gaining four points in the month under review.

Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel has undergone a successful surgery. The Nigeria international suffered an injury while playing for his Chinese club Tianjin Teda two weeks ago, and has been out since, before going under the knife and will now go into rehab as he starts his recuperation and journey back to fitness.
The 30-year old posted a picture of himself on a hospital bed after the surgery with the caption: “Surgery went well, rehab next… can’t wait to be back, shame I can’t be on the pitch fighting with my team” Following his injury and surgery, he will now miss out of the Super Eagles’ planned training camp in the French island of Corsica next month, where they will play a friendly against a Corsica XI, and a possible clash with Burkina Faso.
