JAMB candidates riot in Makurdi

MAKURDI—AGGRIEVED Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, candidates, yesterday, besieged the Makurdi zonal office of the examination body, smashing vehicles and destroying valuables leading to the arrest of over 50 of them.

Vanguard gathered from an eyewitness that the aggrieved candidates were due to collect their e-registration slips yesterday, preparatory to the commencement of the Computer-Based Test, CBT, on Saturday.

According to an eyewitness,“unfortunately while at the JAMB office, the candidates got impatient and resorted to engage some of the JAMB officials in a fisticuff which immediately escalated into a major crisis.

“Within minutes, the candidates who were in their hundreds took over Abu Shuluwa Road, making bonfire, throwing stones and smashing windows and cars parked within the office complex.”

Confirming the incident, the Benue State Zonal Coordinator of JAMB, Mr. Samuel Umoru, said the candidates were supposed to receive their e-registration slips ahead of Saturday’s examination.

He said: “We were at the point of issuing the slips to them when they suddenly besieged the office, smashing and destroying our property for no reason whatsoever; if not for the quick intervention of the Police, the story would have been different.”

Contacted, the Benue State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Hyacinth Dagala said the over 300 candidates were asked by JAMB officials to wait for just one hour for the e-registration slips, but in protest they took the laws in their hands.

Dagala said the police officers who were later deployed to the office dispersed the candidates with teargas canisters, adding that over 50 of them were arrested.
