Question (Joseph):
I am a fresh graduate of mass comm but wanna be a professional footballer after service (NYSC). How do you feel I can make it happen in this 9ja economy?
Answer:
First of all (go down low), I want to commend your bravity and smartness for even attempting to attend a higher institution let alone graduate. (Thumbs Up). I owe you a gift so that others can be encouraged. (just send your account details to info@askteekay.com)
In a country like Nigeria where football is not a passion for the government (ask the NPL teams), it’s gonna be a very hard task to choose football as a career but it is still possible.
1. Since you read Mass Comm, I advice you get a job as a sport analyst or commentator or what have you because you need to be close to your dreams.
2. You need to keep training yourself without stop. MJ was in the studio for at least 20 hours daily (no wonder is the POP legend)
3. Join a training club and stand out. I.e. Pepsi football academy (that’s where the likes of Mikel Obi started from)
4. You cannot stand out and not be noticed so choose your first club/posting  wisely (Mikel Obi didn’t).
5. Wherever you find yourself, stand out in football ( you should be the best footballer in your university, platoon, CDS, PPA, office games etc)
6. Bottom line is you have to stand out in your career choice as so many people claim to know how to play.
7. Have fun while doing what you do so that people will pay you for the fun you’re having.
WOW 101:
– climbing to the top demands strength- whether it is to the top of Mount Everest or your Career
– working with great people makes you great; you learn a lot and it also gives you the experience and confidence to move on with your own career
– the worst days of those who enjoy what they do are better than the best days of those who don’t
– find out what you like doing best and get someone to pay you for doing it.
